Mine Site Reclamation

The main objective of this course is to train students on the reclamation of mine waste disposal areas. The following topics will be covered in the course: acid mine drainage (AMD) and contaminated neutral drainage (CND) formation and prediction; unsaturated fluid flow; heat transport; materials characterization; water covers; covers with capillary barrier effects; impermeable covers; elevated water table combined with monolayer covers; other AMD control methods; and numerical modelling of unsaturated flow and heat transport. Students will further their understanding of lecture materials through detailed laboratory investigations and site visits to several active and abandoned mines.
